The RCSU Science Challenge asks students to communicate a scientific idea engagingly to non-specialists. James Son won Jenni Munroe’s 2026 High School Essay category by writing about a concern he had personally encountered: AI systems sounding confident while being wrong.
His method was not to chase the most complicated possible topic. He began with genuine curiosity, developed his own perspective, connected the science to relatable experience and then shortened the draft until its argument and prose flowed clearly.
