    James used four stages: collecting ideas and experiences, producing a complete first draft, smoothing the prose while removing irrelevant material, and developing a strong opening hook. His final version was considerably shorter than his first.

    Use simple prose, remove unnecessary jargon and connect the concept to experiences a reader can recognise. James grounded his discussion of AI confidence in the familiar experience of a chatbot insisting that a correct solution was wrong.

    He used ChatGPT to proofread his own writing and suggest more appropriate words. He deliberately avoided using it for brainstorming because he wanted the essay’s distinctive ideas to come from his own thinking.

    James did not get feedback before submitting, so outside comments are not the only route to a strong entry. Whether working alone or with feedback, check clarity, relevance and paragraph flow carefully yourself.
