Our Creative Writing program provides an opportunity to create an original story based on one of the topics for the current competition season. Students compete individually. Students pick one of the four annual problem topics on which to write a related short story. Students write 1500 words or less imagining the logical outcome of actions or events set at least 20 years in the future.

Choose division: Compete in Junior (Grades 4–6), Middle (Grades 7–9), or Senior (Grades 10–12).
Select a topic: Pick one of the four annual problem topics for the current competition season.
Research the real world issue: Thoroughly research the chosen real world issue to support a topic-related story.
Write the short story: Create an original futuristic narrative (1500 words or less) set at least 20 years in the future.
Participate via an affiliate and submit: Participate through a regional affiliate (or Open affiliate if local affiliate does not offer Creative Writing). Submissions may follow a one- or two-submission approach depending on the affiliate.
Junior Division: Grades 4 to 6
Middle Division: Grades 7 to 9
Senior Division: Grades 10 to 12
Participate through schools, clubs, or independently through a Future Problem Solving regional affiliate
Works alongside an adult who serves as coach or adult liaison
Submitted work must be original and fully student-created
